The SHL selected Michigan Gray Wolves G Dirk “The Bear” Lundquist as its Player of the Week. Lundquist has long been considered the SHL’s premier goaltender. And although he is not having his greatest season overall, this week he was back in top form, going 4-0-0 with an 0.73 GAA and a .968 save percentage. For the season, Lundquist ranks among the league’s best; his 24 wins and 1.70 GAA lead the league, while his .933 save percentage is tied for the best mark with Quebec’s Riki Tiktuunen.
On Saturday, Lundquist stopped 30 shots, helping the Wolves down Dakota 3-2 in overtime. On Tuesday and Wednesday, he put up back-to-back shutouts. First, he turned aside 33 Saskatchewan shots in a 1-0 overtime victory. The next night, he halted 18 blasts to secure a 2-1 win over the Wolves’ rivals from Anchorage.
“There’s a lot of talk in this league about how maybe Lundquist isn’t the best in the league any more, that maybe Tiktuunen or [Lasse] Koskinen is better than him now. People can talk all they want, but then along comes a week like this to remind everyone that he’s still The Bear.”
