The SHL selected Hamilton Pistols LW Steven Alexander as its Player of the Week. The 26-year-old winger had another excellent week, recording 12 points (7 goals, 5 assists). Alexander’s heroics led the Pistols to clinch their second straight playoff berth.
It’s the fourth time since the All-Star break of the season that Alexander has received the honor, which is a testament to the incredible second half the star has had. Alexander got married at Gunpowder Armory just before the break, and married life seems to agree with him: he scored 38 of his 52 goals and 70 of his 100 points after his wedding day. He wound up tied for the league lead in points and tied with teammate Calvin Frye for second in the SHL in goals.
On Sunday, Alexander opened the regular season’s closing week with a hat trick and an assist as the Pistols whipped Washington 4-2. On Tuesday, he scored twice and had another assist in another 4-2 triumph over the Galaxy, officially clinching a playoff spot. On Thursday, Alexander produced another goal and a pair of assists in a 5-2 beatdown of Boston.
“Ever since Alex tied the knot, a change has come over him,” said Pistols coach Keith Shields. “He’s played with a new purpose, and it’s been awesome to watch. He’s always been a driven guy, but he’s found a another level. He fights day and night like he’s running out of time. I know all the teams in the playoffs are tough, but I wouldn’t bet against us because of Alex. Just you wait.”
