The SHL selected Hamilton Pistols C Calvin Frye as its Player of the Week. For the week, Frye put up 9 points (3 goals and 6 assists), bringing his season total to 55 (28 goals and 27 assists). On Wednesday, Frye provided the whole of Hamilton’s offense, banging home a pair of goals in a 3-2 loss to Washington. On Friday, he provided a pair of assists as the Pistols battled Michigan to a 3-3 draw.
Frye, a 21-year-old rookie from Regina, has had a sensational first year. He earned a spot on Hamilton’s high-wattage first line and is considered one of the leading contenders for the Rookie of the Year Award.
“Calvin is a truly remarkable young man,” said Pistols coach Keith Shields. “He’s been a real revelation for us. He’s a great shooter, a terrific passer, and he’s got a real nose for the puck. He’s got a tremendous attitude, too — he’s a team-first, low-ego kind of guy. But he’s a tough customer, too. He doesn’t start fights, but he doesn’t let guys push him around either. If I had a daughter, I’d want her to marry him.”
